The Crucible is a dramatic work by American playwright Arthur Miller. Both works show that not only is Puritanism harsh and strict, but that this harshness makes it blind, cruel, hypocritical, and destructive.

Although he was later denounced, he promoted unfounded accusations and suspicions of communism in many quarters, and is best known for his investigation of communists in the United States Army. Miller himself was brought before Congress in and convicted of contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate. Hundreds of other persons faced accusations of witchcraft and dozens more languished in jail without trials. Reverend Hale arrives at the Proctor home to question Elizabeth and John Proctor regarding their moral character, as Elizabeth's name has been mentioned in the court. Abigail joins in and soon all of the girls are hysterical and exclaiming the names of everyone they believe to be witches in Salem.

John Proctor and his wife, Elizabeth, discuss the events and the fact that fourteen people have been arrested for witchcraft in the town. Governor Phips, for instance, shifted the blame to Stoughton, who nevertheless became the next Governor of Massachusetts.
